On Thursday, January 23rd, the Roger Hines Sextet appeared at The One and Only Dick’s Den on N. High Street in Columbus, Ohio.
In addition to Hines on upright and electric bass, the band included Stan Smith on guitar, Stan’s brother Breeze Smith, from California, on drums, Shane Willis on drums, Alex Burgoyne on soprano and alto sax, and Mark Donavan on tenor and baritone sax.
I’ve known Roger and Stan for many years. I first heard them together in the 70’s in their band Sanctuary at Oldfield’s. I heard them play together before this Dick’s Den gig most recently at Barcelona. Stan Smith & Roger Hines at Barcelona in German Village
Because of the two drum kits onstage at Dick’s Thursday night , along with the two basses, the guitar and horns were set up below the stage.
There was some awesome jazz played that night ! Sadly, WordPress, my blog host, didn’t allow me to upload any clips for you to see and hear. You will just have to imagine the wonderful sounds from these photos.
Things I particularly liked during the set I was there for included Stan’s scorching guitar solos, the duet between Roger and Stan, the intro drum duet by Shane and Breeze at the beginning of the evening, Mark’s baritone sax work, and Alex and Mark on duelling saxes! 🙂
